Launch of e-Parenting Network
on May 30, 2002

April 2002

e-Parenting Network is interactive web TV where parents can watch programs about parenting issues, read and download valuable information and ask questions about issues that are important to them.

e-Parenting Network, funded in part by Human Resources Development Canada, is the brainchild of the Canadian Institute of Child Health. This multi-media program allows families to access, from their own communities, evidence-based parenting information delivered in a parent friendly manner. Parents who don't have access to the Internet or a computer can still participate in the program through the Community Access Program sites located in their community. Many local libraries are also connected.

e-Parenting Network is all about accessibility: bringing the expertise closer to the parent - either live through the Internet or via the e-Parenting Network website. All material for e-Parenting Network is designed with the parent in mind and will be delivered in an easy-to-understand, straight-to-the-point fashion, without getting caught up in the high-tech "bells and whistles" that are too often a part of media projects.

The series consists of eight on-line, interactive sessions with guest speakers, panelists, cutaway footage to reinforce the learning and simple bullet points to further reinforce the material.

The eight topics to be covered are: breastfeeding, nutrition for toddlers and for school-aged children, safety in the home, in the car and in the neighbourhood, climate change, and effective parenting strategies.

Each topic will be broken into a series of 5-minute chapters. Each week a new chapter will be made available through the website. Once all chapters have been posted, a live webcast will be held with the expert in the studio to answer questions that parents have emailed in regarding the subject matter.

Special pages of the website will be dedicated to each topic, with viewable video (webcasts, with a host and guest experts), research material and links to other resources.

While eight modules won't solve it all or answer everyone's questions about parenting, e-Parenting Network is the first measured step in what can grow to be enormously popular and a useful tool for parents across the country - any time, anywhere.

May 30, 2002 is the official launch date for the e-Parenting Network program; however, the website and first webcast can be previewed at www.eparentingnetwork.ca. The live air dates will be available through the web sites of both CICH (www.cich.ca) and e-Parenting Network www.eparentingnetwork.ca.
