What is the Centre of Excellence for Early Childhood
Development (CEECD)?

The CEECD is one of Health Canada's five Centres of Excellence for Children's Health and Well-Being. It has been established to collect, analyze and disseminate information regarding the social and emotional aspects of early child development. The CEECD synthesizes knowledge, resources and expertise on early childhood development to support the health and well-being of Canadian families with children to the age of five.

What are CEECD's specific activities?

Three interactive committees of national experts - Research, Services and Policy - collaborate to promote:

  • Reviews and analyses of current information on indicators related to social and emotional development in early childhood
  • Collaborative research on key issues
  • Sharing of information with policy and decision-makers in government and other agencies
  • Linking of local, national and international networks to share early child development information
  • Distribution of quality information to a broad audience

What is the CEECD producing?

The CEECD provides important information on social and emotional development in early childhood to community-based organizations, educators, health professionals, and government decision-makers across Canada. The CEECD generates four main products to disseminate the information to targeted audiences:

  • Newsletters, highlighting important child development issues (ongoing)
  • The web-based Encyclopedia on Early Childhood Development at www.excellence-earlychildhood.ca/ (in progress - preliminary information can now be viewed on the website)
  • Interactive multimedia CDs (in progress)
  • Videotapes of CEECD's conferences and workshops (in progress).

What is CICH's role in CEECD?

The Canadian Institute of Child Health (CICH) is a partner in the CEECD, together with the University of Montreal and the Canadian Child Care Federation (CCCF). CICH is a member of CEECD's Advisory and Directing Councils and coordinates the work of its Research Development Committee.
