How to talk to your children about the events of September 11, 2001

September 2001

Children get their emotional cues from adults:

remain calm, tolerant and patient.

  • Put the events in the context of their world: Explain that these are isolated events, occurring in two places in two cities and that there are a few "bad guys" (understood by children) and a lot of "good guys"doing very special and heroic things.

  • Children have worlds that are smaller than adults do. Point out that they have a "community" –– their families, churches /places of worship, schools, day cares, hospitals, policemen and fireman that are all there to care for them.

  • Children relate differently at different ages. Ask questions to determine their levels of understanding and answer questions to that level. A three-year-old might talk about good guys and bad guys, where an eight year old might have a better understanding of criminals and highjackers.

  • Schedules are important: meals, bedtime, and activities should remain as normal as possible.

  • At times of stress we all need to touch our "touchstones". Children –– even adolescents –– may benefit from hearing their parent''s voice: for example, reading at bedtime out loud is reassuring.

  • Children need to do something: write letters of appreciation to their own fire fighters, police officers, or community leaders; connect with extended families or join in community or faith activities such as lighting candles.

  • Hug often. Children need more physical affection and reassurance.

  • Some regression may be experienced. Children may want to sleep with you, cry more often, and have increased angry outbursts. Watch for regression and if it sustained, or you are worried, call your doctor.

  • Turn off the television and read books that are hopeful, funny and that build confidence in human beings.

  • Talk about the good in all people –– from every background and nationality.
